Go Red in February to Raise Awareness for American Heart Month

February marks American Heart Month, which provides us with an opportunity to pause and reflect on the importance of heart health, as it is the number one killer of Americans. This is especially important for women as heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States. American Heart Month allows people to assess their current lifestyle choices while arming them with knowledge and resources to make changes and learn the warning signs of heart attack, strokes, and cardiac arrest as well as how to respond in these life-threatening moments.
By the Numbers
- 314,186 women died from heart disease in 2020.
- 523.2 million cases of cardiovascular disease were reported in 2019, a 26.6% increase since 2010.
- 74% of adults' out-of-hospital cardiac arrests (OHCA) occur at home, and 16.3% occur in public settings.
- Men have a 23% higher chance of surviving a cardiac event than women.
- Women receive CPR only 39% of the time in public compared to 45% of men.
More and more people are surviving cardiac events, except for women.
Improving Cardiac Arrest Survival Rates for Women
